Good Food is for Everyone.
When our founder and CEO Bernadette Eriksen registered Flavour Creations as a business in 1997, we weren’t the world’s top dysphagia nutrition company.
We weren’t one of the largest medical nutrition manufacturers in Australia.
We were one woman with two small children, without an income or family support, driven only by a vision: to make good nutrition accessible for everyone.
Twenty-four years later, we’re still making that dream happen, but we’re doing it with over 120 nutrition solutions, with more than 100 incredible team members.
This is our story.
Flavour Creations is born
A new arrival in Queensland, Bernadette Eriksen becomes a single mum with her 17-month-old son Sean, and pregnant with her next child, Laura. Without an income or family support, Bernadette decides to combine her entrepreneurial spirit with her passion for helping people.
In her home kitchen, while caring for her first child, she creates an innovative way to help people with dysphagia drink fluid – ThickPlus™. One of Australia’s first dysphagic nutrition solutions, ThickPlus gains a foothold in the medical nutrition market, and Bernadette’s fledgling business starts to grow.
More solutions for more people
By 2004, Flavour Creations is well-known in Australia’s dysphagia community, but the need for increasingly diverse solutions is growing. To help even more people with dysphagia access the nutrition they need, we launch the EasyThick™ and Dysphagia Ready-to-Drink ranges.
We also rent our first factory in Seventeen Mile Rocks, Brisbane, expanding from a five-square-metre production room to a 292-square-metre manufacturing floor.
A Company on the Rise
EasyThick and Ready-to-Drink Cups quickly establish Flavour Creations as a market leader, driving us past our next milestone: $1 million in total sales.
Flavour Creations expands rapidly across three different theatres.
The Dysphagia Ready-to-Drink range is developed even further with the addition of 13 more varieties.
We drive into previously untapped international markets, using the Ready-to-Drink Cups and EasyThick to spearhead our growth in New Zealand.
We also make good nutrition available to Australia’s culturally diverse communities by gaining kosher and halal certification for most of our products.
After its inception in a tiny home kitchen, Flavour Creations finally settles into a real home. We acquire our own factory and first true corporate offices in Tennyson, Brisbane.
We celebrate with the development and launch of Recover, a sub-brand positioned around high-energy high-protein supplements for clinical use.
Our quality processes are certified with ISO-9001:2008, and our Ready-to-Drink range expands to 21 products.
By 2014, Flavour Creations has a range of 26 Ready-to-Drink Cups – our focus now is on consolidating the gains we’ve made over the past eight years.
We launch two new brands: instant THICK and AdVital. Instant THICK is our solution to thickening fluids on the go, while AdVital targets holistic health – its first product is the nutritionally complete AdVital Powder.
We also cement our reputation for quality, becoming signatories to the Australian Packaging Convention, and gaining certification under Woolworths Quality Assurance.
Disruptive innovation occurs when a company serving markets neglected by the incumbents starts successfully serving mainstream markets too.
In 2016, Flavour Creations disrupts Australia’s nutrition market.
After six years and an investment of over $7 million, we launch our patented Dysphagia Cup, an ergonomic cup specifically designed to make drinking as easy as possible for people with dysphagia. The Dysphagia Cup goes on to win multiple awards.
We also launch SCREAMIES, a new brand of shelf-stable, no-melt ice cream, and Shape It, a powder for moulding texture-modified food into more enticing shapes.
We acquire a larger corporate office and second warehouse, basing ourselves in Acacia Ridge, Brisbane – not far from where it all started in 1997.
Recognition of success
The successes of Flavour Creations in 2016 have thrust us into the national spotlight. Our CEO Bernadette Eriksen wins the Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year, the Telstra Entrepreneur Award, and the Greater Brisbane Women in Business Award.
Our products don’t go unrecognised, either. For our continuous creativity in development, we receive the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards Queensland Urban Utilities Product Innovation Award.
We also add Strawberry to our line-up of SCREAMIES ice cream flavours.
Taking on New Challenges
2019 sees Flavour Creations grow even further. With a sales team of 20 staff, we now distribute nutritional solutions to over 5,000 hospitals and aged care homes across Australia.
Our offerings are also showcased in Dubai at Gulfood 2019, the world’s largest annual food and beverage trade exhibition.
Standing Against COVID-19
COVID-19 sweeps across the globe, erasing normalcy.
In Australia, Flavour Creations rises to meet the virus head-on, providing leading nutritional and safety solutions for hospitals, clinics, and aged care homes across the country.
For the second year in a row, we exhibit our products at a COVID-safe Gulfood, with SCREAMIES starring in the Future Foods Exhibition.
We also gain FSSC 22000 Quality certification, validating our rigorous quality and food safety protocols.
In 2021, Flavour Creations disrupts the global dysphagia nutrition market.
After five years, we launch our patent-pending Amylase Resistant™ formula to maintain the texture and viscosity of foods and drinks during consumption. For people living with dysphagia, our Amylase Resistant formula eliminates risk of choking and aspiration, improves the safety, quality and taste of our products, and supports better hydration and nutrition.
We also launched instant THICK Liquid, a new product of shelf-stable, liquid thickener.
Preservation and Growth
As we move into 2022 and the future, our focus is twofold: preservation and growth.
We will continue to preserve our legacy – our culture of innovation, our commitment to local, Aussie-grown quality, our steadfast support of Australia’s most vulnerable communities.
But we will also grow.
We’ll keep expanding our range of products to meet mainstream and specialised nutritional needs.
We’ll grow the Flavour family with the addition of talented, creative individuals, embracing unique perspectives and identities to create a stronger team.
We’ll diversify the way we approach nutrition to help make good food increasingly accessible to everyone.
And we’ll never stop searching for the next innovative nutrition solution, because we know that millions of people around the world are relying on us to provide them with the nutrition they need.
Good health starts with good food, and good food starts with Flavour Creations.
